斯人讀舒適

第一次接觸到佛洛斯特（Robert Frost）是在1995年暮春，美國文學課，上了將近一年的美國文學，我終於被其中的作品感動，如電擊般的震懾，就是這一首〈未履之途〉：


The Road Not Taken（by Robert Frost）

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
這也是我第一次有這麼深的想望要把一首詩翻譯成中文，看似清晰淺白的一首詩，在翻譯時卻遇到許多困難。詩中許多語意曖昧多元，強要取其中一解卻會喪失更多的思辯空間，甚至許多用詞都是模擬兩可但又緊緊扣連，可以感受到卻又無法直接解釋。每過一兩年我就會重新檢視這一首詩的翻譯，重新更改譯文，至今我已經不知道我原先是怎麼譯的了，其間譯文的變化也代表了這些年來我對世事的看法更迭。


未履之途 （勞伯特 佛洛斯特）

黃木下兩路蜿蜒，
只可惜我不能同時體驗
身為一個行者，佇足良久
極力眺望足下的伸延
到底在哪一彎樹叢隱現；

換一條路，仍然相同，
也許會更好走，
因為它誘人入勝 綠草密濃；
雖然走這一道，和另一道
感覺起來似乎雷同，

清晨裡兩路平橫
未經足跡踏染的落葉重重。
啊，我對第一步遲遲未決！
尚不知如何展開行程，
我曾懷疑是否要回頭。

我該要嘆訴
尋尋覓覓歲歲年年：
黃木下兩路蜿蜒，而我—
我選擇了行人較少的那一邊，
而這已讓一切完全不同。

「尋尋覓覓歲歲年年…我選擇了行人較少的那一邊，而這已讓一切完全不同。」就是這麼一句，讓我對於自己的選擇越來越少動搖，即使是荊棘滿佈荒僻的路，我的選擇已經讓這一切都有所不同。
