第一次接觸到佛洛斯特(Robert Frost)是在1995年暮春,美國文學課,上了將近一年的美國文學,我終於被其中的作品感動,如電擊般的震懾,就是這一首〈未履之途〉:


The Road Not Taken(by Robert Frost)

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
這也是我第一次有這麼深的想望要把一首詩翻譯成中文,看似清晰淺白的一首詩,在翻譯時卻遇到許多困難。詩中許多語意曖昧多元,強要取其中一解卻會喪失更多的思辯空間,甚至許多用詞都是模擬兩可但又緊緊扣連,可以感受到卻又無法直接解釋。每過一兩年我就會重新檢視這一首詩的翻譯,重新更改譯文,至今我已經不知道我原先是怎麼譯的了,其間譯文的變化也代表了這些年來我對世事的看法更迭。


未履之途 (勞伯特 佛洛斯特)

黃木下兩路蜿蜒,
只可惜我不能同時體驗
身為一個行者,佇足良久
極力眺望足下的伸延
到底在哪一彎樹叢隱現;

換一條路,仍然相同,
也許會更好走,
因為它誘人入勝 綠草密濃;
雖然走這一道,和另一道
感覺起來似乎雷同,

清晨裡兩路平橫
未經足跡踏染的落葉重重。
啊,我對第一步遲遲未決!
尚不知如何展開行程,
我曾懷疑是否要回頭。

我該要嘆訴
尋尋覓覓歲歲年年:
黃木下兩路蜿蜒,而我—
我選擇了行人較少的那一邊,
而這已讓一切完全不同。

「尋尋覓覓歲歲年年…我選擇了行人較少的那一邊,而這已讓一切完全不同。」就是這麼一句,讓我對於自己的選擇越來越少動搖,即使是荊棘滿佈荒僻的路,我的選擇已經讓這一切都有所不同。
